As a teacher educator, my initial response is favorable- I want to know how to best educate our future teachers. However, it seems the way to make it individualized is through inquiry. As each preservice teacher studies his/her own practice, within their field experience, learning occurs and opportunities for new inquiries emerge. This inquiry aligned with effective coaching can create the individualized attention that educators desire. Yendell-Hoppey and Franco suggests that there are six routines that could be considered as signature pedagogies. As I read through each of these (inquiry, focused observation, mentoring and coaching, co-teaching, reflection on teaching, and integrated coursework and field experience) I realized that it is possible to create signature pedagogies that are individualized to meet the need of each prospective teacher.
It is my desire to research more about the possibilities of signature pedagogies within teacher education and the blockades that have kept us from defining these for the profession.
